This vague military feel tracks with something Red tells Adelaide when the two finally face off in what seems to be a classroom. Jamal was shot in the head, either through a ricochet bullet or a stray shot, and was instantly killed. No matter that Kendra is a professor of psychology who corrects her husband’s “white trash” diction. Jordan Peele’s second film has an ending that dares you to bring what you think to it. Finally, Adelaide overcomes Red and kills her. One of the reasons Get Out took off so readily with online theorists was that every single piece of it was crafted to add up to the film’s central revelation about elderly white people literally possessing the bodies of young black people. But Us isn’t really “about” capitalism, unless you (like me) want to read that into it. (Sidebar: This could also be a really elaborate riff on Peele’s part on The Shining, another horror movie that is occasionally read by some of its hardcore fans through the lens of America’s general inability to deal with the genocide lurking in its root system. That middle hour is so fun precisely because it never really bothers to stop and make you think about the movie’s deeper themes.

|, November 25, 2019 A new film is coming to Netflix and it seems like it’s going to be quite an emotional ride. Almost all the acting here is pointedly overstated, as if the performers are trying to project past an especially long proscenium. Jason, somehow, seems to realize this in his mother’s eyes, and he looks worried as the scene cuts to the camera tilting over the hills surrounding Santa Cruz — where a long chain of Tethers stretches, presumably from sea to shining sea. In a 2018 review of the play written for The Undefeated, culture critic Soraya Nadia McDonald reveals the ending: “Jamal, who was unarmed, has been dead this whole time and the department has been giving his parents the runaround while coming up with an official story that will absolve it of responsibility for shooting him in the head.”. | Rating: 1/5 Or is it because of his lack of apparent hostility? Though comments like this put the audience strongly on Kendra’s side, she does not make it easy to stay there. | Rating: B+ To try to escape the past is to try to escape yourself.

| Rating: 2/5 Judging by the trailer, the film will take place in a single room of a police station — just as the play does. Every time you think you’ve got the movie pinned down to say, “It’s about this!” it slips away from you. But aboveground, the many Tethers have joined hands together in a mirror of Hands Across America, the 1986 event meant to raise money and awareness of hunger, which stretched a 6.5 million-person chain (almost all the way) across the Lower 48. “There’s a lot of mothers of the movement who’ve come to see the show, moms who have been in this situation, they are so grateful that we don’t let people off the hook, that you have to walk out of the theater being willing to deal with the reality and that you don’t get to walk out of the theater pretending that everything is OK, ’cause it’s not,” she said.
