It’s apparently a very popular destination in the summer on the weekends. This is the former Mill Valley Library – now a private residence. You can view it from the top too, where you can see some of the water flowing into it. You can ascend the narrow trail left of the falls to cross another footbridge and loop back. All in all, it’s not a bad place to spend a weekday afternoon. The trail soon climbs a bit past what’s know locally as the Three Wells, a series of deep pools eroded over the years into the rock. One of the most accessible waterfalls in the Bay Area is an easy and scenic hike from downtown Mill Valley to Cascade Falls Park. It’s probably my favorite waterfall in all of Southern California. At the junction of two creeks, the trail comes back to Cascade Drive. Bear right to cross the foot bridge. You could probably do the whole thing in under an hour. You'll come to a place where the trail forks; take the lower trail to the right and in a few seconds you'll find yourself at the falls, which plunge down about 15 feet or so into a shallow pool. Like the rest of Mill Valley, the surrounding area is a very lush green. All rights reserved. In contrast, this part of Mill Valley does not contain any high schools. The Cascade Falls trailhead will be on your right and is clearly marked with a sign. There was even somebody playing guitar near it when I went once. The hike is only about half a mile round-trip if you start at the Cascade Falls trailhead on Cascade Drive. The falls are a short walk up the creek. Veer left onto Olive St. then turn right onto Throckmorten Ave. At the stop sign, cross the street onto Cascade Drive as it angles across Old Mill Park. Shot with Phantom 2 Vision. When you reach downtown, make a left onto Sunnyside Ave. Park where you can. The wide trail follows Cascade Creek, which flows downhill on its way to meet Old Mill Creek. They want to send you to the park via Lovell Avenue which is not the way to go. The road is narrow here and parking is very limited, although there are a few spaces around the trailhead area. After about 0.8 mile look for a trail on your left, after crossing the creek on an old concrete bridge (opposite the #320 mailbox). Another option to return is to continue up the trail after the 2nd footbridge to Lovell Ave, then head right and return downtown. To get there, take East Blithedale to Throckmorton Avenue and turn left. Beware directions on Apple or Google maps. The Cascade Falls trailhead will be on your right and is clearly marked with a sign. It's a short out-and-back or loop hike that's easy enough for just about everyone in the family to tackle, and the waterfall is amazing, especially after a heavy rainstorm like we had last week. We will guide you on your outdoor adventure. You can walk up and around to the top of the falls, where you'll cross Cataract Creek again via another bridge and loop around back onto the main trail. At the traffic circle continue right on Cascade Drive. Follow Throckmorton through downtown Mill Valley and continue until it merges with Cascade Drive. Along the way you’ll pass through a historic part of town where the Bay Area's first sawmill was built in the 1830s, providing most of the timber to build early San Francisco. Follow the trail uphill through a redwood forest lush with ferns (and wildflowers in the spring) and across wooden bridges that span the creek.
