Sigtuna’s beautiful town center still echoes its past with narrow medieval streets populated by charming 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses while the beautiful backdrop of Lake Mälaren makes for a perfect boat excursion. Visby is the best-preserved fortified commercial city in Northern Europe, according to UNESCO, and the walls are nearly 700 years old. A tiny mountain town located a few kilometers from the Norwegian border, Åre is nestled in the mountain valley leading down to the shores of the beautiful Åresjön lake that due to its enviable location is a popular skiing destination and was voted one of the best ski resorts in the world by Condé Nast Traveler in 2008. The ski slopes in Åre are some of the most highly rated in the world. Lake Vättern is Sweden’s second largest lake and well deserved a visit. Jokkmokk is a fairytale town located in Lapland, Sweden’s northernmost province, where you can experience reindeer racing, visit a winter market and learn about the local indigenous group called the Sámi. Tres Hombres Art, this is its name, was founded by Per Gessle, singer of Roxette. One of my favourite places in Sweden which I have visited many times is Gothenburg’s archipelago and the West Coast from the Göta river to Strömstad at the Norwegian border. The Åreskutan is home to Northern Europe’s greatest vertical drop and in the winter, visitors can enjoy well-lit night skiing expeditions, during which it is possible to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Sweden’s northernmost town Kiruna is located in the heart of Swedish Lapland and is a town whose surrounding beautiful lakes and breathtaking mountains have made it a haven for nature lovers and skiers. Gotland and its raukar are a tourist mecca both for Swedens and foreigners who visit the island and its coast mainly during the months of June and July. Jokkmokk is in a prime spot for access to four national parks in the Laponia World Heritage Area. Personally, I prefer the feeling in the gardens which is all-in-one a flowershop, cafeteria and workplace. Despite its small size, Sigtuna is still allowed city status because of the historical significance of the area. The Höga Kusten – high by Swedish standards (being Sweden a “flat country”, 286 meters / 940 ft. above sea level is considered high!) The picturesque Medieval town centre is filled with craft shops, restaurants, charming cafés and other small boutique shops. The walled Medieval town of Visby has been called the Pearl of the Baltic, and its standing as a UNESCO World Heritage site gives the old Viking town some well-deserved credit.

Although more recently known as the stamping ground of Swedish writer Henning Mankell’s fictional detective Kurt Wallander – as seen played on TV by both Krister Henriksson and Kenneth Branagh – the bustling ferry port of Ystad is a hub of history too with sights like the 12th-century Gråbrödraklostret monastery, one of the best preserved monasteries in Sweden, reminding of the town’s Middle Age origins. With plenty on time you can wander through almost unhabited islands like Grinda or visit popular holiday destinations like Sandhamn or Vaxholm. Not surprisingly Marstrand is a crowded spot on the West Coast of Sweden during summer months. Try [oerns-hoelds-veek]), that is 450 km / 280 mi north of Stockholm. Åreskutan is a 1,500 meter / 5,000 ft high mountain located in the Åre area in the county of Jämtland at about 650 km / 400 mi from Stockholm. Although you’ll feel miles away from the city, a day trip from Stockholm can be easily arranged.

Don’t forget to visit Orsa Grönklitt to the north of Lake Siljan which is Europe’s largest park for predators and is visited by 100,000 people every year. For example, Österlen, the south eastern part of Skåne is such a beautiful place. It is fully crowded in summer but has a lot of feeling and a seaside attitude.
