This trail is best in the late spring, summer, and fall.
Along the way, the trail passes an apparent cave entrance. N 37°17'15.2" At Cabin Spring the trail begins a steep drop in elevation and descends 2,500 feet over 4.7 miles ending at the Grotto Picnic Area. West Rim Track - For a delightful walk through pristine eucalypt forests and lush rainforest, the easy/moderate West Rim walking track offers spectacular views of dramatic gorges and waterfalls in Morton National Park, near Robertson. If you like the idea of hiking the West Rim Trail, but a 17 mile point-to-point hike from Lava Point doesn’t sound like something you would want to do, there is an alternative.
Most of Morton National Park remains closed due to bushfire damage and to protect the safety of our visitors.
Following this gently undulating track, you’ll trace the western edge of the horseshoe shaped escarpment leading to Renown lookout. Stretching from Bundanoon and Fitzroy Falls in the north to Pigeon House Mountain (Didthul) in the south, the magnificent Morton National Park lays claim to being the fifth largest national park in New South Wales and covers an area of 1997 square kilometres. An easy introduction to some of the spectacular landscapes of Morton National Park is the West Rim Walking Track located in the Southern Highlands near Robertson. West Rim Walking Track Overview Nearby Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre offers loads of information on the local highlights, as well as delicious meals, making this walk ideal for family outings and a highlight of a car tour of the Southern Highlands. Permits are available online for reservable sites and in person at a Visitor Center for first come, first serve sites. Elevation 7173 ft, Wilderness Trail and Campsite Descriptions, Make a Reservation for a Backpacking Permit, Zion National Park Look for the flowering boronia as well as the purple flowering chocolate lilies, with their distinctive scent, in the spring. The trail starts at the West Rim trailhead from near Lava Point and traverses across the high alpine elevation with sweeping views out into the Wildcat Canyon area for the first 6.5 miles as you drop into Potato Hollow. The West Rim Trail follows along the rim with views of Phantom Valley and the canyons to the south.
